We got to the stadium and then spent a while just sitting down and relaxing waiting to start our final preparations. Some of us quickly made their way to the long lines for the porta-potties to make sure that they carried no extra weight on the course :)
Finally it was time to make our way to the starting corals all within the Olympic Stadium. Soon little groups of Bolder Options runners would be making their way across Amsterdam. We waited for the gun to go off and then made the way around the track to get to the start line. The food was good and we dug in. Two types of pasta and great Italian Salad - just what a runner needs.
When we were almost done - Ryan spoke for a bit to help us focus on the real reason we were running the marathon - our Bolder Options kids. In a touching speech he told us of his experiences with how a little support can make big differences not only to the lives of the kids but also to the families that they live in. We then handed a few Bolder Options gifts to our hosts and benefactors.
John Tarbuck then thanked Ryan for his efforts in bringing the team to Amsterdam and for his work in making it all run smoothly. We then ended this portion of our dinner with a special treat - encouraging notes from current Bolder Options mentees. If this didnt get us excited for the next day - I guess nothing could
View more pictures from the Pasta Feed

Day 3 - Post 1 - Numbers Expos and other praparations

Today was number day - just to make sure we didnt forget that we had to run this thing. We left the hotel and caught the tram to the exposition. The race exposition was near the Olympic Stadium which hosted the Olympics in 1928. We got our numbers pretty smoothly and then moved over to the exposition to do some race shopping. We were able to get quite a lot of Amsterdam swag to take back with us. Cheers to the Amsterdam Marathon for putting on a good expo.

The group was then free to spend the rest of the morning on their own. After breakfast - Ryan led a run thru the area that has been a large part of the history of this city. The runners were given a brief explanation of how the area fit into the city. Once back most of the group had a quick lunch and then we headed for the another historical landmark of this city - the Heineken brewery.

Heineken beer is something Amsterdam is proud of and they sure made sure that the tour did the city proud. We were taken through the history of the brewery and also given a brief explanation of how the beer is made. Another cool part of the ride is an interactive ride that allowed us to "be the beer". Once we had been brewed - we were now ready to taste the beer. We also spent a bit of time with a "master bartender" who explained to us what a good beer pour was and what the best way to drink a beer was. Ann was even lucky enough to get to pour her own pint.
We then headed to the canal tour which would allow us to tour the city from the canals that make the city famous. We were told of the three main canals of the city and were shown the various important buildings of the city.

The evening ended with most of us heading out to a nice dinner.
See more pictures from Day 2 here

Day 1 - Post #2 - The Team

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves it will be a good idea for me to introduce Team Amsterdam to you. The first group made it to the hotel at around 9 and was treated to complimentary breakfast by the Hotel V even though we had technically not checked in. As we were unable to check in till 2PM some of that first group took a walk through the streets of Amsterdam – looking for – who would of thought it – a pair of boots for Tesha. Aided admirable, with fashion advice from Tom and Ryan we were able to zero in and buy a pair that Tesha liked.

That done we had lunch at the café of Beurs van Berlage and then made it back to the hotel for our welcome happy hour. We got together for an evening of fellowship and trip information on Thu 8th October. All of the team was there. Pizza and Amstel kept got us in the mood and then we went over our trip plans. We started off with Ryan handing each of us our official running jerseys and a totally awesome golf jacket to keep us warm in the chilly Amsterdam fall. With kick-ass attire like this who wouldn’t want to run. Then we went over the flight details and how we would get to the hotel – which happens to be in a really trendy area (according to some locals we know). We also got really excited over our planned activities – a walking/running tour thru the red light district, a canal tour and a tour of the Heineken brewery. We went over our race day plans – the marathon starts at 10:30 AM (strange) and the half at 2PM. We take the train to the Olympic stadium and then its go time. We then spent some more time mingling with each other and got home with dreams of Amsterdam

Check out more pictures at Pre-trip Meeting

The Hay is in the Barn

I thought I should do a brief update of our training and the stuff the team has been doing together.
Ragnar Relay
Quite a few of us did the Ragnar Relay which is a 195 mile relay run from Winona to Minneapolis. The coolest part about the race is that it has prizes for costumes and cool teams (like us ). We rocked the race as Ragnar 911. Led by our very own Lt. Dangle – Ryan Foss – our team pretty much was the talk of the relay. After the first leg we even had groupies – who would pay just to have their pictures with us.
Kate, Aleisha, Paul, Tom, Darshan, Liz, Laura, Sarah, Tesha (she liked the team so much that she even joined the Amsterdam team), Ryan, Graham and Glen. We started at 11:30 on Friday morning and got done around 5:30 on Saturday. For an activity that involved little sleep and a lot of hard hill runs – it sure was a lot of fun.

Check out more cool pictures at Ragnar Pictures
We also entered the competition for best video based on the Ragnar Relay. The team came up with a video that is an instant youTube hit. You can check it out here
The Ragnar 911 Video

Weekend Training Runs
It sucks to run alone and even sucks more when you have to do a long run alone. So the team has been doing its long runs as a team and meeting at either the river or the lakes to get our long runs in. Ryan, Clea, Darshan and Glen have organized routes for the team and have helped keep the team on track with its training

20 Mile Long Run
As anyone training for a marathon will tell you this is the most important long run of them all. So to make it easier Bolder Options helped organize a supported 20 Miler for the team. Thanks to Ryan, Richard and Troy who helped get the runners goodies at each of the water stops. We did the grand rounds starting bright and early at the Harriet bandshell and making it all the way along the parkway, up the river and along the chain of lakes. Little did we know – but when we got done most of us had actually covered a little over 21 miles. We topped that off with a few beers in the park and then headed home to rest our weary legs.

So now the team is in taper – reduced mileage and a lot of eating. We are looking forward to our pre race send-off party on the 8th of October (watch for the post). As they say the hay is in the barn and the racehorses are itching to run.
